Recover access
Overview
LoginShield is a state-of-the-art authentication system that was designed for security, reliability, and usability.
The LoginShield app stores credentials that log you in to websites and other network applications. If the device where the LoginShield app is installed is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can follow the steps described on this page to recover access to your account.
When you recover access to your account, all other devices are automatically locked out of your account.
For example, imagine that you accidentally left your phone somewhere while on a trip and it's not practical to return to that spot and retrieve it, or that your phone is stolen from you. If you then obtain a new phone, install LoginShield on the new phone, and then recover access to your account using the LoginShield app on the new phone, then anyone in possession of your lost or stolen phone would not be able to use the LoginShield app on that phone.
Step by step
Download and install the LoginShield app on a new device.
See the download section of the handbook for more information.
Open the LoginShield app.
Tap the continue button.
If you already set up the LoginShield app, you will not see this screen.
Enter your email address and tap send email.
Check your email for a message from LoginShield with a verification code.
Enter the verification code into the input box and tap continue.
If you didn't receive the email with the code, or you need to change the email address, tap the pencil icon to return to the previous step.
If the email address you verified is associated to a LoginShield account, you will be prompted if you want to recover access.
Tap the recover access button.
The following steps depend on the access recovery methods that you set up for your account.
If you see the registration form instead of the recover access prompt, you might have registered your LoginShield account using a different email address. You can tap the left arrow to return to the previous step and try a different email address.
Location
If you selected one or more locations from which access recovery is allowed to happen, you will see this location prompt.
Move to one of the pre-determined locations, then tap the continue button.
If location services are not enabled on the phone, or permission was not granted to the LoginShield app to use your location, you will see a prompt to enable location or grant location permissions.
Password
If you set a password for access recovery, you will see this password prompt.
Enter your password exactly like you did when you set it up, then tap the continue button.
The LoginShield service limits the number of attempts on the password. If you try too many times, further attempts will be blocked and you can try again in 24 hours.
State ID
If you set a state ID for access recovery, you will see this state ID prompt.
Enter your chosen state ID exactly like you did when you set it up, then tap the continue button.
The LoginShield service limits the number of attempts on the state ID. If you try too many times, further attempts will be blocked and you can try again in 24 hours.
Memorable date
If you set a memorable date for access recovery, you will see this memorable date prompt.
Enter your chosen memorable date, then tap the continue button.
The LoginShield service limits the number of attempts on the memorable date. If you try too many times, further attempts will be blocked and you can try again in 24 hours.
Outcome
When you successfully complete all the access recovery challenges, you will see a message that the device is now linked to your account.
Tap the finish button.
For your safety, all other devices that had access to your account are now locked out and cannot be used to log in with your credentials. If you were using multiple devices with your LoginShield account, you will need to link the other devices to your account again.
