Access recovery settings

Overview

The LoginShield app stores your private credentials for authenticating to websites and other network applications. The credentials protect your online accounts from unauthorized access, so it's important not to lose access to those credentials.

In the event that your device is lost, stolen, or damaged, it's possible to recover your credentials.

You should prepare for this situation by configuring the access recovery settings.

LoginShield uses up to 5 challenges during the access recovery process:

  • email (mandatory)
  • password
  • state ID
  • memorable date
  • location

The email challenge is mandatory and involves sending a verification code to your email address. The rest of the challenges are optional. Because email accounts are usually protected by long-term, possibly weak passwords, the email challenge by itself is not adequate to protect your LoginShield credentials. We highly recommend configuring an access recovery password as a minimum. You can further protect your credentials by configuring the other challenges also.

Step by step

Open the LoginShield app.

Tap the three-dots button in the top right corner and tap on Settings in the menu.

Main activity and settings

Tap on set up access recovery.

Set up access recovery activity

Choose Password, State ID, or Memorable Date. You can also choose all three.

Your password, state ID, or memorable date are NOT visible to the LoginShield team. The LoginShield app sends this information to the server in a one-way encrypted format that can only be used to verify these secrets without seeing them.

Password

Enter your chosen access recovery password twice.

You must be able to type the password exactly the same way when you try to recover access later.

State ID

Enter your chosen state ID twice. A state ID could be your passport number, driver license, social security number (US), etc.

Your choice of state ID is private. We cannot see the state ID you enter. Be sure to enter it exactly as it appears on your official document, or in a way that you normally would write it. Any punctuation becomes part of the secret so you must be able to type it exactly the same way when you try to recover access later.

Enter your chosen memorable date. A memorable date could be your birthday, anniversary, or any other date that you would remember easily.

Your choice of memorable date is private. We cannot see the date you enter. Be sure to choose a date that you would think of again later when you need to recover access.
